Stickers Warn Of The Dangers Of Silo Fires

17529641 G

It's a reminder for north country emergency workers about the dangers of silo fires.

The Garrett W. Loomis Foundation has begun a program to place warning stickers on certain types of silos on farms across the area.

So far more than 30 farms in Jefferson County have put up stickers and there's an effort to get farmers in Lewis, St. Lawrence, and other neighboring counties to do the same.

The type of silos that cause these hazards are known as oxygen limiting silos, which are basically air-tight, so there is a large amount of pressure built up inside.

When water is used to fight fires in them, it creates a build-up of steam inside, which can cause the silo to burst.

"We just want people to realize that, even though there are not many incidents involving these, that we're aware of, when you have one they can be very catastrophic," said Kip Bachar, member of the Garrett Loomis Foundation.

The foundation was founded in the memory of Garrett Loomis, a Sackets Harbor firefighter who was killed in a silo explosion in 2010.

This is another way the foundation is trying to promote safety practices for emergency crews.

Garrett W. Loomis Fire Safety Seminar on April 8, 2017

On Saturday, April 8, 2017 the Jefferson Community College Fire Protection Technology program will host the 6th Annual Garrett W. Loomis Fire Safety Seminar in Sturtz Theater. The seminar is broken up into two sessions. A morning session will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. An afternoon session will take place at 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Attendees are welcomed to attend one session or both. He helped to develop the Saving Our Own program designed to teach firefighters how to save other firefighters if trapped or lost in a burning building. Recognized for his contribution to Saving Our Own, Lasky received the Innnovator of the Year award from the Internal Society of Fire Service Instructors. Lasky is the author of Pride and Ownership-A Firefighter’s Love of the Job and Five Alarm Leadership: From the Firehouse to the Fireground and more than 250 technical articles.

The Garrett Loomis Fire Safety Seminar will feature the main presentation, Sweating the Small Stuff, during the morning session. Registration is required. Register online. The afternoon session will focus on highlights from Lasky’s book Pride and Ownership-A Firefighter’s Love of the Job. Afternoon session registration is not required.

Garrett Loomis Fire Safety & Educational Series 2016

Spring 2016 Seminar 5

Saturday April 9, 2016 9am-1:00 pm., Jefferson Community College

Garrett Loomis Fire Safety & Educational Series 2016

Deputy Chief Dennis Rubin (D.C. Fire Department)

“Incident Scene Safety: Leadership & Accountability”

The fire-rescue service’s exposure risk for death and injury at all types of responses is an exceptional high risk. Within the United States, more than 100 fire fighters die each year in the line of duty. Another, 90,000 American fire fighters will suffer reportable injuries. This incident safety officer’s training course has been developed to help control this unacceptable loss of human life and limb of one of our County’s most important resources, the fire fighter. All members should think in the role of “Incident Safety Officer”, regardless of their rank in the department and will benefit from this training program. This course uses “Rube’s Rules for Survival” as the program textbook.
